Legends of Recreation and Parks in Alberta Development Funds

The Legends Endowments exist to support the industry engagement and education of students and emerging leaders; as well as supporting research and researchers that can positively impact recreation and parks.

The legends endowment includes the primary fund and named funds – named funds are created when a specific fund achieves 10K or more.

The proceeds from the Dr. Tim Burton Legends Endowment will be strategically used in legacy recognition of Dr. Burton and to advance the growth and development of recreation and parks.

Barb Hill Memorial Endowment

STATUS – In development (current value ~$3K)

Barbara Hill was a passionate supporter of recreation and parks throughout her career. She as a long time volunteer for both ARPA and CPRA serving as President of organizations.

The proceeds from the Barb Hill Memorial Endowment will be strategically used in legacy recognition of Barb and to advance the growth and development of recreation and parks.

Costs of participation in professional development for Students and Emerging Leaders continue to grow – RFLF is pleased to partner with Students across Alberta to raise money and support their success.

The Fund supports current students and recent graduates (5 years) to attend educational events.

Truth and Reconciliation Endowment

 It is our responsibility to continue to move towards reconciliation and partnership with Indigenous communities through constant education and promotion of Indigenous content in all facets and initiatives of the Recreation for Life Foundation. This program is focused on the RFLF’s continuous efforts in seeking and providing programs with Indigenous content in moving towards Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

The funding put toward this program will go towards the engagement of promoting Indigenous content and enhance participants’ understanding of Indigenous traditions, cultures, and orders.


Steve Barr Memorial Endowment

STATUS – Endowed (current value ~$21K)

Steve Barr died at a young age. He was a devoted father and husband, distinguished architect and a passionate supporter of recreation and parks services in Alberta.

As a lasting tribute to Steve Barr, the Recreation for Life Foundation has established an endowment in his name.

In his career, Steve, as a partner in Barr Ryder Architects and Planners, specialized in superior architectural design of recreation, sport and cultural facilities.

Steve was a stalwart supporter of ARPA and its partner the Recreation for Life Foundation. He believed in the value of the recreation and parks sector.

Whenever he could Steve worked hard to advocate for the need and importance of community recreation and parks.

Red Deer College – Recreation Administration Memorial Endowment

STATUS – Endowed (current value ~$21K)

For 30 years the Recreation Administration Program at Red Deer College produced leaders in the field that are still active and contributing to this day.

When the program was closed in 2005, Alumni of the program worked together to create memorial endowment.

Ron Gorgichuk Memorial Endowment

STATUS – Endowed (current value ~$25K)

Ron Gorgichuk, recipient of ARPA’s prestigious Award of Merit made amazing contributions to the field of recreation and parks not just in Alberta, but also at a national and international level.

His various positions within the Alberta Government and the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation have all had a common denominator – improving quality of life through recreation and parks, specifically, Ron extensively championed for a trails network throughout Alberta.

Ron kept busy in a number of volunteer roles including President of the Canadian Team Handball Federation and as a Director of the Canadian Olympic Association.

The Ron Gorgichuk Endowment Fund was established to celebrate Ron’s contributions to recreation and parks in the province.

Normie Kwong Memorial Endowment

STATUS – Endowed (current value ~$24K)

The Honourable Norman L. Kwong, CM, AOE, KStJ was a lifelong supporter of recreation, parks, and sport. During his tenure as the 16th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta His Honour served as Honourary Patron of the Recreation for Life Foundation.

As a lasting tribute to The Honourable Norman L. Kwong, the Recreation for Life Foundation has established an endowment in his name.

Wanda Wetterberg Memorial Endowment

STATUS – Endowed (current value ~$25K)

Wanda Wetterberg was a leader in Recreation and Parks throughout her career. She died tragically during her tenure as Chair of the Foundation due to accident on her family farm..

As a lasting tribute Wanda left a permanent gift to the Recreation for Life Foundation resulting in the established of this endowment in her name.

Wanda was a stalwart supporter of ARPA and the Recreation for Life Foundation. He believed in the value of the recreation and parks sector.
